Situated on the southern bank of the Orange River mouth, Alexander Bay is the focus point of diamond diggings and, with nearby Oranjemund, the centre of the world's richest alluvial diamond deposits. Originally founded as a copper port, it was named after Sir James Edward Alexander, who shipped the Richtersveld copper ore mined from the Orange River for export from this bay.
