When the railway from the south reached this area in 1891, a town was laid out on the arm of Mr. Jan Tromp, who gave Trompsburg its name. During those years the town was used as a centre for state officials. At present Trompsburg is a typical Free State country town, with a diversity that would surprise many tourists. It is amongst many other things, the home of the second largest shearing barn in South Africa, it has the largest privately owned fishery in South Africa and many styles of Arts and Crafts are made and exhibited here. To top it all Trompsburg is also the head office of Xhariep District Municipality, as well as the head office of Kopanong Local Municipality.
