This picturesque cattle-farming town probably has the record for changing its name the most of any town in the country. Some of the previous names were Groot Moordenaarspoort (1829), Caledon (1833), Verheull (1835) and Heidelberg (1863). The present name, Bethulie, means "chosen by God", which is probably well chosen, as the violent period before its formation lead to the death of many.
