Port Alfred is set beside the Kowie River on the Eastern Cape Coast. The town was established by 1820 settlers with the intension of developing a harbour and maritime centre. It proved unsuitable for this purpose, however, and today the wide and pleasant river, safe beach and excellent leisure and sporting amenities make the town a popular residential and holiday resort. Port Alfred was named after Queen Victoria's second son, Prince Alfred, on the occasion of his first visit to South Africa in 1860.
