Originally a farm, Tokai gets its name from the Tokai wine-growing region in Hungary.

The original Homestead still exists and is famous for the legend of the Tokai Manor Ghost. It is said that the ghost of a young man and his horse can be seen on certain nights. The Farm remained in the hands of the Eksteen family for over 80 years and was sold to the Government in 1883.

Tokai is well known for its beautiful forest. Simon van der Stel planted over 4000 oak trees in 1694 and the pines were planted in the 1800's. Today large tracts of pines are being removed to make way for indigenous plants and trees.

The Tokai Arboretum (1885), a National Monument, remains untouched and has a variety of oaks and giant Californian Redwoods. Steenberg Estate in Tokai has an 18-hole golf course in a real estate development, with vineyards and mountain surrounds. The Steenberg area is also home to some fine restaurants and is the gateway to the Constantia Wine Route.
