Tokai is well known for its beautiful forest. Simon van der Stel planted over 4000 oak trees in 1694 and the pines were planted in the 1800's. Today large tracts of pines are being removed to make way for indigenous plants and trees.
The Tokai Arboretum (1885), a National Monument, remains untouched and has a variety of oaks and giant Californian Redwoods. Steenberg Estate in Tokai has an 18-hole golf course in a real estate development, with vineyards and mountain surrounds.
