Waterval Boven is upstream from, or above the 90m falls of the Elands River whose steep gorge is followed by the railway line. The town is situated on the farm Doornhoek and had its origins in 1895 due to the building of the Eastern Line Railway from Delagoa Bay to Pretoria.
