Although the area was proclaimed as a district in 1804, the town was only established in 1810, which make it the fifth oldest town in SA. Uitenhage is not far from Port Elizabeth and has a long and colourful history reflected in its fine historical buildings. Uitenhage is a major motor manufacturing centre.
